This being said I thought that my best option was to go to the after school program at the sports complex because I knew that they run from 3-6. Similar to the other times I was there, the first thing that we did was walk to the elementary school and pick the students up, once we got back to the complex we went onto the turf and started doing the around the world run. The student who I have been working with was not there this time so during the run I was just bouncing around from person to person taking the time to get to know them a little bit better. Once we sat down to figure out the results of the run, I ended up sitting next to a young boy who I was previously told had some developmental delays and was very shy and detached from the group. This was easy to see immediately because when I asked him questions he was slow and quiet to answer, with a short response majority of the time. This encounter was very similar to what all of his interactions with the other students that I saw were like. Because of this, he often did not have a partners for group games and activities. Although I wished he could get the chance to work with his peers more, this was a good stop for me to step in and work with him. Many of the skills that we worked on during the activities seemed pretty easy for him and he did well with them. So most of the skill related feedback that I gave him was good, but I did keep telling him to speak up while he was talking and to try and interact with other students. Although I did not see any sudden improvement in these areas, I hope that my time with him helped him realize that it would be good for him to do these things. This was kind of exciting for me because it was the lab that I was in last year, so I knew most of the participants and hadn't seen them in a while. In the beginning, I was basically just walking around watching everyone and jumping in wherever someone needed help. This was nice because I had the opportunity to see and catch up with all of the participants that I had wanted to. After about 20 minutes of this, another participant had arrived and did not have a mentor to work with him. The teacher then asked me to go over and work with him. This participant was new this year, and was about 5-6 years old. I was excited to meet someone new and get the chance to hangout with and get to know him. Although I did not plan on really teaching on this day so did not have a lesson plan, we thought of a few fun games together that kept us entertained. First we played line tag, then rock paper scissor chase, then practice rolling around on mats. This was a lot of fun and I could tell that the student was enjoying it too because he was laughing non stop. I was thankful that I got the opportunity to come back and see this lab and all of the people that I knew from last year, and also for the chance to meet and work with a new student. I had a great day with my student. He got some cool new shoe laces that stretch instead of tie so that when he kicks his shoes off they are easier to get back on him. He was very excited about this and was running around showing everyone! Once we finally settled down we played with cars, then legos then with playdough. It was very cold out today so we stayed inside in the cafeteria the whole time. I think that he was excited about this and selfishly I was too. After all of the games that we played, it was snack time and he went up to help out with snack prep like he usually does. Once he got his food we sat down together to eat and he was on his best behavior. After finishing his snack, we decided to do a puzzle. The puzzle took us a long time but he really enjoyed it and we had a lot of fun putting it together. When we were almost done, his mother got there to pick him up. He insisted that she stay until we finish and she agreed. After another 2-3 minutes or so we completed the puzzle and high-fived in excitement. However, his excitement did not end here. He started screaming and cheering and ran out of the cafeteria down the hall. We both went after him and after making a few turns in the hall found him plopped down in the middle of the hallway with both shoes kicked out. It took about five minutes for us to convince him to calm down and get his shoes back on to get ready to go. It was another great day there. I really like this program and think that the people who are in charge of it do a great job choosing activities that get the students up and moving and that the students also enjoy. When I first got there we got right into my favorite activity, the around the world run. I ran with one specific student who is about 9 and has some anger and behavioral issues. One thing that I noticed about him right away was that he does not like to be told what to do. For example, when he stopped to walk, he would not start running again until he was ready, no matter what I said. I found that it was easier to let him have some control and just be there with him as more of a friend than a teacher. This is a benefit of being a mentor rather than a school teacher because I was allowed to do this and I could tell that he liked that a lot more. Once I started falling his lead instead of trying to lead myself, he loosened up some and started to laugh and have fun with me. This was a very good feeling and the exact reaction that I was hoping for. Although as a teacher you need to keep a fine line between friend and teacher with your students, this experience taught me that it is okay to give students a little freedom sometimes as long as they are not taking advantage of it. However, the student that I work with had a full day at the YWCA so I went there for a couple hours to still have my set time with him. He did very well today and I was pleased with his attitude overall. When I first got there, he wanted me to read to him so we did that for a little while and then everyone went to the gym. We went with them but after being in there for about 5 minutes he decided that he did not want to do that today so we went back to the classroom. We then played with play dough for a while and used cookie cutters to make fun shapes and had a few good laughs about that. After this, the rest of the students came back in for snack so we sat around then table with a group and chatted over snack. Once this was over, we went to a different classroom where there was stations set up. The stations included dress up, blocks, cards, coloring and Foosball. Students were allowed to choose which station they wanted to go to and rotate at their own pace. My student and I started at the dress up station but kind of just played with the toys sitting around and watch the other students dress up in funny costumes rather than dressing up ourselves. After this, we went to the block station and spent a long time building and knocking down different structures. When rotating to the next station, my student had a little accident and another mentor took him to the bathroom to clean up so during this time I played Foosball with some other children. When my child got back, we went to the coloring station for about 5 minutes and then his mom got there to pick him up. He was around 7 years old and had some developmental delays. He was also very quiet so as much as I tried to keep conversation going I struggled to connect with him. At the beginning, we did "Run Around the World" again. I really like this activity because the kids all seem to enjoy it and it is a great way to get them to get their heart rates up for a little while. Last time, I just stood at the finish and handed out tickets to students after each lap but this time I actually ran with the students. I had fun with this because I kept switching off students and running with different groups and enjoyed getting to socialize with all of them. It was also nice to be able to help motivate them to run faster with me for a little while and I was glad that I could convince some of them to do so. Once we were done with this activity and finished counting up our miles, the 201 mentors took over again. They had a few fun group games planned at the beginning and then we were divided into two different groups. One group worked on basketball dribbling and one worked on soccer dribbling and we switched half way through. My student did pretty well in both of these and I think he enjoyed the positive feedback I gave him on his skills. One interesting experience that I had during these drills was when a student told me that they were bad at soccer, and I told him that's why we are practicing and he responded with "well i'm not practicing and you can't make me, this is America you know, it's a free country!". This is a little funny now but I was pretty taken aback and not sure what to say at the time. Instead, I worked with another girl who is in third grade. I had a lot of fun working with her and I think that she really liked having someone work with her one on one. In the beginning, we sat at a table and worked on her homework together. She was studying for a spelling test and we did this by quizing each other on the words. I think that she enjoyed quizing me because she liked having the power position of being the teacher, and it helped her learn the words when she "corrected" mine. Once we finished her homework, we colored for the rest of the time until snack time. This was fun because we were telling each other what to draw and then ended up both giving each other our drawings when we were done. I think she really liked that I let her keep mine and that I was excited about being able to keep hers. After this, it was snack time and we just sat around and talked while she ate her snack. Since it was cold today, we did not go outside but instead played games in the gym. Before I ever worked with this student, I remember seeing her be very active and enjoy running around but today she was completely opposite. I'm not sure if she just wasn't in the mood for it or if she was really just enjoying the one on one time sitting around but she insisted that we sit out and read. So that is what we did. She had 3 different books with her and she read them all to me like I was her "student". Again, I think she was liking being in the power position. Her mother got there to pick her up while we were on the last book so we finished it up quick and then she had to go. I think it will be good for me to get these 2 different experiences and this program so far seems like it will be lots of fun. At this program, there are children from a few different schools who attend. The student that I worked specifically with is in second grade and is a very nice young boy with a few developmental delays. While waiting for all the students to get to the program, since some get transported from farther away, we sat in the classroom for a little while coloring and talking about how school went that day. This was nice to have some down time to get to know a little bit about my student. Next, we went into the gym and did something that they called "Run Around the World". For this, students run lap and get a sticker each time they go around. Eight laps around equals one mile, so students get to guess how many miles total they think the class will run in 10 minutes. They also get to keep track of their own personal miles with a sticker chart back in the classroom and get prizes once they run a certain amount of miles. I think that this is a great system because it motivates kids to exercise and makes it a lot more fun than it would be without any incentive. After this, some mentors from a PED 201 class came, and they had games planned that they led for the class. Although I would have liked the chance to lead a game or two as well, it was fun to be able to continue hanging out with my student and play the games with all of the kids. During this time, I could give my student feedback about little things that he might need a little more help with during the activities. I think that is was good for him and I'm hoping that he liked having me there to do this as well. I got to the school earlier this time so I was there for the portion of the program in the cafeteria before heading out to the playground. While inside, some students work on and get help with their homework, with others color, play board games or draw. There is also a snack time while the students are inside and today they had graham crackers and milk. My participant did not have any homework to do so we played games and drew pictures while we were inside. The first game that we played was Uno. I remember playing this game all the time when I was younger, but there were many rules that have been changed since then so it was interesting to see how they played. After this game, we drew pictures and colored with crayons until snack time. After snack time it was time to head outside. We had lots of fun on the play ground and played lots of the same games as last week. I also learned that my students like to pretend to run a restaurant, and takes peoples orders through a "window" in the play ground. I thought this was very entertaining and was impressed by his creativity. He takes peoples orders, tells them how much they owe for the food and then serves them rocks off of the ground. We did this for a long time today. Towards the end, my student started getting a little restless and was anxious to be picked up. This is when he started acting up and threw a little bit of a fit. He took his socks, shoes and glasses off and laid at the bottom of the slide, not letting anyone else pass. This was frustrating because me and one other aids tried everything to get him to put his stuff back on and move. We ended up having to carry him off of the slide, and do more convincing to finally get him to cooperate. We bribed him with letting him go back inside to the warm and play a game in their if he followed our directions. Once he finally put his socks, shoes and glasses back on we went inside and colored until his ride got there. His ride was a little later than usual so I was there for two and a half hours today. Today was my first day at my placement for PED 447. I am helping out at the after school program, specifically with one student with various developmental delays. I was only at my placement for an hour and a half today because of a slight miscommunication but I had a good time and a great first session getting to know my student. We played outside on the play ground the entire time I was there. We played tag, duck-duck-goose, kicked a ball back and forth and just ran around playing on the playground equipment. I think my student liked being able to do whatever activities he wanted to and having me there just to hangout with him. But it was a little strange for me to just be there doing more observing than planning and leading activities. That is what makes this experience so different from experiences that I have had in other classes. For future sessions, I will continue to play games and activities that he wants to do, but will also try suggesting some other games that can help him work on things that may not be so easy for him. I think this will be a good time for him to indirectly get some extra skill practice in. I will try and do this in one-on-one games and group games with other students at the after school program. This week was much different than the other weeks when we worked with younger groups because every other time we got the students to play our games and for the most part, things basically went as planned. However, this week trying to teach these students games was basically useless. They had no interest in playing the games we had planned and wanted to just hangout and play basketball with their friends. After realizing that that was all they wanted to do, we decided to just start a pick up game, girls against boys and they ended up having a lot of fun trying to beat all the TA's. I always knew that it was important to go into classes with a back-up plan, but this week just ensured that for me and proved that I will also always have to respect what the students want to do and be willing to do that. I think that this was a very good experience for us because it made me understand a lot better how many different ways you can incorporate technology as a Physical Educator. My favorite part of this lab was playing the Dance game, similar to DDR. I liked this because it was a fun challenge for me, and also a great workout at the same time. I would love to be able to use this for my classes in the future, however I do realize that this is quite expensive and depending on where I am teaching may not be possible. During this lab though, we also played many small games that would be rather inexpensive. Some of these games were not only fun, but also educational. One that I found potentially helpful was a simple letter game, with the foam pieces we were playing with. While thinking of a game I could make with them. I thought it would be easy enough to simply scramble the letters and outlines around the gym, and have students put the pieces together, and also have them put the alphabet in order. This would benefit them in the phsychomotor domain by making them run around to get the scrambled pieces, and also cognitively by making them put the pieces in order. </span><br />

I actually had a lot of fun with this and enjoyed it even more than I thought I would. I have always loved working with young children, but wasn't sure how it would go with such a big group of them. However, they seemed to really enjoy everything that we planned and it went very smooth. My group decided that since Easter is coming up, we should do something fun and related to that. So we started off with our craft of making Easter eggs. The kids seemed to have a blast with this and also enjoyed the book that we read to them after. Following the story time, they had a snack then came into the gym with us for game time. This is when I got my chance to teach the game that I prepared. I was nervous for this because I thought that it would be very difficult to hold their attention, however it went surprisingly well and they really enjoyed it. The reason I think it was so successful was because in the beginning, they had to hop and slide around, getting out all of their built up energy, and then worked into the more relaxed part of the game and since they had blown off some steam they were then ready to listen. I was overall very happy with how this lab went and am excited for when we get to go back! As this group we got to observe and work with a diverse group of students, with a range of ages and skill levels. I really enjoyed doing this because it was exciting to be able to help the children have fun by teaching them games. With a sports theme, we tried to keep our games related to sports and worked on many different athletic poses with the students which was also very interesting in itself. After finishing up with our games we went downstairs for snack/to play board games & color with the students. I also really enjoyed this part because I felt like I got to connect with the students in a different kind of way than I do when just playing games in the gym. I got a better chance to talk with some of them one on one and got to know them a little better than I did before. Which was very exciting and made me more motivated to want to go back and work with them some more! It usually ends up with the more athletic, competitive people having a great time, and the kids who probably need to be physical educated the most sitting out or being targeted and not enjoying themselves. However, I think that there are many different variations that can be made to the game to eliminate these problems, and also limit the safety concerns associated with the game. If I were to teach a dodgeball game in my classroom, I would make it more like the game of trenchball, where instead of being eliminated when hit by a ball, one would have to go to the "trench" on the other side of the court and try to catch balls to get back into the game. This makes everyone more involved and allows more motor skills to be incorporated more often. It would also be a good idea to have a game of "dodgeball" on only one side of the gym, and another activity for anyone who did not want to participate on the other side. Because of this, I do not think that the game of dodgeball should be in the Physical Education "Hall of Shame" but that Physical Educators have good enough judgement to know what is appropriate and what's not.</span><br />

For our lab this week, I was in the Special Projects group and spent the beginning of my time there putting up a bulletin board, then playing with the kids for the rest of the time until our closing dance and cheer. I enjoyed my time there even though I could not be participating and interacting with the kids the whole time. I realize that have references such as bulletin boards about being active is very beneficial for children and should be done on a regular basis. After finishing the bulletin board, I had a time to form a bond with one specific student that seemed to be shying off and staying on the side, not participating in much of anything. I played basketball with this specific student and got her to loosen up and had her laughing and smiling by the end. This was a very good feeling for me and made me even more sure that this is what I want to be doing. The dance and cheer that we did at the end was also a very interesting experience for me because it brought everyone together for one last little hoo-rah! I think that overall it was a very successful week and I am excited to be able to go back!</div>

It not only pointed out many different warning signs of abuse but also what steps to take if this tragic event is suspected. A big lesson that I learned in this area was the fact that the police are not the first people you should call, but a good action to take would be to call the hotline immediately. As disturbing as I found it that there was people in the video that were previous child abusers, I think it was very helpful for us to be able to see this so that in the future we can know what to look for. These simple things that the video and Sister Harriet taught us seem fairly obvious, but when you think about how much you could help a child by reading the potential warning signs of abuse, they must be taken seriously. Examples of this would be how if someone would looked into the situation at Penn State with Jerry Sandusky, and how much time he must have been spending with children, the whole child sexual abuse scandal may have been able to be avoided. <span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: small;">Going to
St. Mary's for the first time I was not quite sure what to expect, but I
was excited to find out. I have always loved working with kids and was
anxious to see what we would be dealing with throughout the semester. I
found this experience to be very fun, and loved how outgoing the kids
were. I do realize that there will also be challenges that come along
with this, and that not all kids will be cooperative or want to
participate all the time. But, I think the biggest thing I took from
this experience was that one needs to keep their patience in order to be
successful in this profession. If I can try my hardest to do this I
think I will be successful and helpful as a future educator, and working
with the children at St. Mary's will be a great start on that road. I
am excited to see what the rest of these labs will be like, and to
finish my blogs and <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/16CNXbeVPjPzPkcQKBPYr-0bCKg4mlmO9AYy907CrWYo/edit">write-ups</a> about them so I will be able to look back

One specific area that is impacted by physical activity is affective growth. Affective growth is how students learn to interact and react with other students and peers. The way that physical activity is intertwined with this is because lots of physical activity involves students working together to accomplish a common goal, which will therefor make them feel more comfortable being on a team with one another. One thing that I learned from this chapter was the concept of learning through the physical. This was discussed in the section about concept learning. This section of the book talked about how many basic educational concepts can be taught on a playing field or court. Physical education and play can also be used to re-enforce educational concepts and make it easier for some students to learn depending on what style of learning they prefer. The reason that many students can pick up on learning through the physical faster than learning in a regular classroom setting is because learning while "playing" and doing physical activities is fun! I was excited to finally be getting into my Phys Ed classes that gave me real life experience in this field, but was not sure what to expect on the first day of class. However, I was relieved once I got there and we just went over the syllabus and discussed what we would be doing in class and in lab. The overall environment of the classroom made me look forward to the rest of the semester and excited about what we would be doing. My names Payge Lehman and i'm currently a Sophomore here at SUNY Cortland studying Physical Education. I'm excited to be starting my core classes and to finally be exposed to public schools and get the chance to work with children. I've never used a blog account before so this will take some time to get used to but I think I will learn to find it very useful and hopefully even enjoy it. Over my break between semesters I was enrolled in an educational psychology class and I think that this class was very helpful for me and will make me more successful in my field because I got a better idea of how to deal with children with different abilities and disabilities.
